MY DEGENERATION

It’s about teen love. It’s about teen dreams. It’s about digging your grave with an electric guitar. MY DEGENERATION (1989), Jon Moritsugu’s first feature, is ostensibly about an all-girl rock band playing music for the beef industry. Starring a teen-aged Amy Davis, the movie flows like a drunken semiotics presentation through a grainy sewer of filth and noise.

It played at Sundance, where Roger Ebert threw down his popcorn in a fit and walked out after just 7 minutes.

In the grand tradition of BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, THE FABULOUS STAINS, DESPERATE TEENAGE LOVEDOLLS, and ROCK AND ROLL MOBSTER GIRLS, MY DEGENERATION is the story of a female rock trio. The blonde bass player narrates, has visions of cottage cheese and canned half peaches, and falls in love with a (real) pig’s head that thinks out loud. The music is great… and the humour is very on target.
PSYCHOTRONIC VIDEO, Winter 1990

MY DEGENERATION‘s cast insisted on whiskey and donuts at the start of every day and fast-food chicken burgers available on 30 minutes notice at any time.
